Position Purpose:

The Apprentice Meter Technician is a path to a Meter Technician position, by observing, carry out, and demonstrating proficiency installing and maintaining meters, metering equipment, and associated equipment and infrastructure.

Responsibilities:

  • Promote safety through compliance with Alectra policies and procedures, taking steps to carry out work in a safe manner, identifying, documenting, and resolving hazards, and taking an active role in improving safety in all aspects of metering work.
  • Install, verify, maintain, remove, replace, and troubleshoot metering equipment and installations on all existing voltages and phases, including specialized metering installations.
  • Interrogate and program meters and install, maintain, and troubleshoot communication equipment and issues related to meter interrogation.
  • Provide positive customer service and be an ambassador for Alectra in the community by coordinating with other departments and the customer to ensure prompt service, by working with customers to resolve access and metering issues, and by providing information on metering standards and requirements.
  • Support Alectra's Collections, New Connection, Lines, Billing, Engineering, Customer Service, Regulatory and other departments, by carrying out work in the field and office, such as: disconnects for non-pay, investigations of power quality issues, ground faults, high bills, theft of power and other requested work.
  • Test, reprogram, and seal meters to internal and government standards, maintain meter test equipment and documents, and review meter product Quality Documents prior to use.
  • Support our meter fleet by determining sample lot acceptance, and maintain meter seals, equipment and records.
  • Apprentice Meter Technician with approved training to perform testing on 240 Volt underground service wires at transformer.
  • Support our Quality System by participating in audits and process development, identifying and documenting non-conformances, corrective actions, and promote continuous improvement.
  • Responsible for demonstrating and maintaining a working knowledge and understanding of the Company’s safety policies and practices. Report any unsafe conditions or observed unsafe practices and make all efforts reasonable to work in accordance with The Ontario Health and Safety Act.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Skills & Qualifications:

Education & Specialized Knowledge

  • Mearie Meter Technician Level I, II or III certificates preferred.
  • Electrical Technician or Technologist Certificate from a community college, or Certified Electrician License, required.
  • Working knowledge of Measurement Canada Act and Regulations in relation to electricity metering preferred.
  • Knowledge of metering concepts and supporting technologies.
  • Must hold and maintain a valid Class “G” Driver’s License. 

Experience

  • Related experience preferred. 

Skills/Abilities/Competencies

  • Demonstrated ability to solve moderately complex problems.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills with coworkers and members of the public to achieve positive outcomes for the company.
  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety Act, EUSR and other related safety regulations.
  • Knowledge of tools and equipment and their life cycles
