Position Purpose:

System Controllers are accountable for the safe, reliable, efficient and effective real-time operation of the distribution system.

Responsibilities:

  • Operate, authorize and direct the safe and reliable operation of the Alectra distribution system under normal and emergency conditions on a 24/7 basis.
  • Monitor, control, and record all activities on the distribution system.
  • Accountable to report deficiencies on all station/distribution equipment including SCADA and communications systems; and conducts follow up as required.
  • Ensure compliance and proficiency with IESO Market Rules/Market Manuals and regulatory requirements.
  • Proficient with all Connection/Operating Agreements.
  • Provide assistance in outage planning activities.
  • Accept, review and administer applications for Work Protection from internal and external work groups ensuring that all such applications are correct and that the requested isolation will provide adequate protection following the IHSA Electrical Utility Protection Code and Alectra's procedures as required.
  • Coordinate activities and outages on transformer stations / transmission lines and distribution equipment with Hydro One/IESO, other utilities and other Alectra departments to ensure all work is carried out in a safe, economic and efficient manner as required.
  • Coordinate disconnects and reconnects between line crews, residential, commercial and key account customers.
  • Respond to customer and stakeholder inquiries.
  • Support the Outage Management process by performing the necessary tasks to ensure an accurate record of operations, interruptions and transfers, and checking and filing all UWPC records and supporting documentation.
  • Respond to outage events and coordinate restoration activities.
  • Dispatch planned and reactive work.
  • Provide front line communication for:
    • Power outage information
    • Estimated restoration times
    • Outage email notification including content
  • Submit update requests to GIS & SCADA groups to make the necessary records updates. Ensure operating diagrams and local databases are updated.
  • Utilize enterprise systems to effectively manage the distribution network.
  • Communicate with and prepare reports for various agencies including, ESA, MOE and MOL.
  • Assist in the development of operating procedures.
  • Responsible for a working knowledge and understanding of and make all efforts reasonable to work in accordance with and ensuring work is done in compliance with the appropriate safety legislation, EUSR rules, Alectra policies and procedures and safe work practices that apply to the work while adhering to the internal responsibility system. Reports any unsafe conditions or observed unsafe work practices using Alectra procedures.

Skills & Qualifications:

Education

  • Certified Engineering Technologist (preferred)/Technician
  • 3-Year College Diploma in an electrical discipline or equivalent
  • MEARIE Certificate as a Journeyperson Municipal Electrical Operator or eligible to obtain in 12 months
  • Certification in the IHSA Utility Work Protection Code or ability to obtain within 3 months
  • Valid class G driver’s license 

Experience

  • Requires a minimum of 4 years of related electrical operating experience
  • Experience in a 24/7 Control Room shift environment
  • Proficient in the use of SCADA systems, Outage Management Systems (OMS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and personal computer applications including Microsoft Office software
  • Experience reading, interpreting and utilizing technical prints and schematics

  • Requirement to be able to work in a rotating shift arrangement is essential
