Job Summary

As a Design Technician, you will be part of an engineering team, tasked with the maintenance and expansion of civil and electrical projects. Projects involve the installation, alteration, extension and/or repair of a variety of electrical and civil equipment; controlled, monitored and/or automated by complex circuity, electronics, and or advanced communication networks.

Key Accountabilities

  • Prepare, create, modify or review civil and electrical design such as, AC/DC electrical schematics, equipment layouts, mechanical drawings, highway crossing, train track crossing, bridge crossing, etc.
  • Assemble and verify bills of materials and cost estimates
  • Being familiar with SAP is an asset
  • Assist project engineer to perform engineering calculations such as voltage drop, pole loading analysis, cable pulling calculation
  • Assist project engineer to obtain all necessary permits during design stage
  • Escalate design issues to Professional Engineers for review and direction
  • Prepare and/or review construction packages, including all required drawings, work instructions, planning documentation, operating systems and regulatory approvals, where required
  • Conduct routine field trips to verify or evaluate the condition/state of assets, to determine the feasibility of designs, to take detailed measurements, and take pictures
  • Assist project engineer in review of designs, plans, drawings, surveys, studies (load, etc.) and/or calculations
  • Support Professional Engineers with: detailed technical studies and/or calculations; preparation of cost estimates; the creation of equipment specifications and installation standards; requests for quotation; evaluation of new equipment
  • Help coordinate construction projects - liaise, consult and communicate with our customers
  • Perform other duties as assigned 

Qualifications

  • Diploma in Electrical/Civil Engineering Technology or Degree in Electrical/Civil Engineering. CET designation is an asset
  • Demonstrated competence in computer drafting using Microstation and AutoCAD is obligatory
  • Experience in design, and construction, within the utilities industry is an asset
  • General knowledge of overhead and underground utility design
  • Ability to scale drawings & visualize 3D objects/cross-sections in 2D
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications
  • Complies with safety guidelines by wearing proper equipment, adopts efficient and safe work practices
  • Completes work in a timely and efficient manner, be able to work well independently with little supervision and attends work punctually
  • Completes assigned work while adapting to changing volumes and pace of work
  • Cooperative with supervisors and reports and interacts collaboratively and effectively with others
  • Valid Class ‘G’ Driver’s license in the Province of Ontario is obligatory
