SUBSTATION MAINTENANCE ELECTRICIAN

Kitchener-Wilmot Hydro Inc. is a local distribution company that is responsible for distributing electricity to approximately 99,000 homes and businesses within the City of Kitchener and Township of Wilmot. 

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

The Substation Maintenance Electrician position is responsible for constructing, operating, maintaining, troubleshooting and repairing the equipment comprising the transformer stations and distribution stations. Also responsible for operating, maintaining, calibrating and troubleshooting and repairing automated equipment including reclosers, sectionalizers, remote operated switches, voltage regulators, capacitors and network transformers. Install, operate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair building wiring, lighting and electrical outlets in transformer vaults/enclosures and electrical rooms as directed. Operate, maintain, troubleshoot and repair wiring, lights and equipment on the street light system. Perform work on energized equipment using appropriate tools, protection equipment and work methods at all voltages. Perform switching as necessary or as directed by the Control Room. Must operate heavy equipment including trucks with trailers, aerial devices, mobile cranes, cable pulling equipment and other motorized devices to provide for safe and efficient installations. Must be able to respond to emergency call-ins. 

Qualifications:

  • Requires a minimum of a Grade 12 secondary school graduation diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be a Journeyman Electrician holding a certificate of qualification issued by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development (Ontario Trade Code 309A or 309C) or an approved equivalent.
  • Preference will be given to those who hold a Journeyman Substation Electrician certificate issued by MEARIE or one must be able to complete this training if not in receipt.
  • Requires a valid Class ‘DZ’ driver’s license.
  • Preference will be given to those who have been trained in the proper use of a mobile crane with a lifting capacity less than 8 tons and who possess proof of training issued by the Ministry of Labour, Training and Skills Development
  • Must be certified in Emergency First Aid and CPR.
  • Must have excellent written and verbal skills and have an ability to interpret drawings, sketches and diagrams.
  • Requires a working knowledge of industry regulations, the ESA Distribution Safety Regulations, the Electrical Utility Safety Rules, the Utility Work Protection Code, the Occupational Health and Safety Act and related Construction and Industrial Regulations and relevant company policies and work procedures.
  • Have an excellent safety and attendance record.
