Engineering Technologist

 

POSITION SUMMARY: Reporting to the Asset & Engineering Supervisor, this position is responsible for the design of the distribution infrastructure including all projects and connections.  Also provides information and technical services to the customers of the utility, or their agents, including, but not limited to, estimating costs of services and specifications for projects, transformer evaluation, site inspections, equipment testing and computer aided drafting. The successful applicant will also be responsible for configuration & administration of our GIS Environment. 

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Ensure assigned jobs are completed as per the required standard, scope, quality and time as it relates to safety and budget.
  • Configuration and administration of our ArcGIS Server Enterprise environment including publishing web maps to ArcPortal for internal and external users, managing ArcGIS Server security, versioning, backups, etc.
  • Develop, maintain, and implement data models for the distribution system allowing for accurate representation of real-world assets.
  • Establishing integrations and workflows between third party software applications and databases (SCADA, Work Management, Billing, Metering, field collection).
  • Input data from field collected data, engineered plans, as-built CAD drawings into various GIS databases 
  • Collect and record all field and site information for all phases of a project including: surveying, elevations, legal fabric and as built data for GIS.
  • Installation and analysis of voltage and power quality equipment and associated reporting.
  • Manage projects, plan and design distribution equipment, and customer connections.
  • Work with the Lakeland Power accounting on economic evaluations and budgeting.
  • Review of third-party attachment applications, including as-built inspections and monitoring.
  • Provide specification data and equipment technical support as requested by other departments.
  • Review and validate equipment certified test reports to ensure compliance with current equipment specifications and Government regulations. (ESA Reg. 22/04)
  • Maintain ESA Reg. 22/04 documentation and assist with the yearly audits.
  • Assist in the technological growth of Lakeland Power with associated systems implementations and improvements.
  • Other duties as assigned 

QUALIFICATIONS:

Education: Must have completed a three-year Electrical Technologist Diploma and acquired a CET designation (or be capable of acquiring one within 3 years). New graduates welcome to apply. Alternatively, a two-year Electrical Technician Diploma in concert with at least 2 years of direct experience designing electrical distribution plant, may be considered.

Knowledge: Working knowledge of electrical distribution is a definite asset. Must be proficient with typical office productivity software applications (i.e. MS Office). Proficiency with SPIDAcalc and CAD design software (such as ARC GIS or AutoCad) is considered an asset. Must have a working knowledge of contract law, and applicable industry construction standards and practises.

Skills: Must be detail oriented, work well in teams and be able to discuss technical details with confidence. Must keep excellent records and be adept at constructively interacting (both verbal and written) with other employees. Must have a good understanding of the electrical distribution business and have the technical experience to gauge and appreciate project scope and scale.

Other: Must possess a valid Class G Driver’s Licence and an acceptable driver’s abstract. 

*Please note this is a full-time unionized position based on the Power Worker’s Union Collective Agreement.  Current hours of work are from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m., Monday-Friday. The successful applicant must be available to assist with after hour emergencies as required.
