WHAT YOU’LL DO

Reporting to the Protection & Control Supervisor, this position is responsible for construction, installation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of control and protection systems associated with our distribution system, transformer stations, and communication and control systems. This role also incorporates the duties of a Substation Electrician and has similarities to a Field Services role. Responsibilities include:

  • Operate all equipment at transformer station facilities, perform routine inspections, testing, maintenance, and reverification of electrical and mechanical equipment and on protection and control devices
  • Construct, install, wire, test, and commission new equipment on all major components of a transformer station and distribution automation equipment
  • Troubleshoot and repair faulty transformer station equipment, control systems, real time communication systems, and distribution equipment
  • Construct and maintain wireless communication systems at substations, repeater sites, and distribution devices for the SCADA network
  • Manage electronic records and test result databases for all station, distribution automation, and SCADA equipment
  • Electrical and mechanical work to install, test, troubleshoot, repair and maintain all station primary switches, transformers, bus work, switchgear, high voltage cables, circuit breakers

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS 

  • Post Secondary education in Electrical Engineering Technology or related discipline
  • MEARIE Substation Electrician Certificate and/or Hydro One P&C Control Courses preferred
  • Knowledge of the Occupation Health and Safety requirements as it relates to individual, organizational and operational requirements
  • Familiar with electrical trade tools, measurement and test equipment and their operation
  • Understanding of E&USA Rules, ESA Distribution Safety Regulations, and Utility Work Protection Code considered an asset
  • Understanding of distribution system equipment and operation
  • Expertise in station related power, control and communications equipment as well as associated test and maintenance procedures
  • Knowledge of TCP/IP, fibre, Ethernet and RF Communications
  • 4 years’ related experience
  • Valid Class “D” driver’s licence with Z endorsement 

Considerations

  • This posting is for a Journeyperson Protection and Control Technologist
  • Candidates with lesser experience may be considered, provided that such experience is equivalent to at least a 2nd year Protection and Control Technologist Apprentice
  • Must be willing to complete all requirements of the MEARIE Journeyperson Substation Electrician program and the Hydro One Protection and Control Courses
