Job Title: Power Line Technician – Apprentice

 

The Power Line Technician Apprentice constructs, operates, maintains and repairs overhead and underground electrical and distribution systems. They erect and maintain steel, wood, fiberglass, laminate and concrete poles, structures, and other related hardware. They install, maintain and repair overhead and underground powerlines and cables, and other associated equipment, such as insulators, conductors, lightening arrestors, switches, metering systems, transformers and lighting and control systems. They splice and terminate conductors and related wiring to connect power distribution and transmission networks. 

These duties will be performed to the level of the applicable skills and knowledge of the incumbent, under the direction of a Certified Journeyperson.

NOTE: Successful applicants will be rotated through the various work centers and departments to ensure familiarization with all aspects of Toronto Hydro’s distribution system.

The incumbent is expected to behave ethically and follow the established code of business conduct, policies and internal control procedures, laws and regulations governing Toronto Hydro.

KEY RESPONSIBILTIES: 

  • Demonstrates safe work practices
  • Communicates with customers and staff
  • Engages in job planning with the Crew Leader and/or Supervisor and follows the plan
  • Selects, operates and maintains tools and equipment
  • Installs, maintains and removes power pole systems
  • Installs and maintains overhead power systems
  • Installs and maintains conductors and control wiring including powerlines and cables
  • Troubleshoots overhead and underground power systems
  • Installs and maintains underground distribution systems
  • Installs, maintains and removes transformers
  • Installs, operates and maintains system protection, control and instrumentation equipment
  • Handles energized lines using rubber protective equipment
  • Handles energized lines using live line tool methods
  • Selects, maintains and operates rigging equipment
  • Follows regulatory procedures and employer’s procedures
  • Identifies defects, contraventions and dangers
  • Applies discretion to solve occupational health and safety problems, and reports are unresolved problems 

REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Two (2) year college diploma in an electrical or electronic field of study (Electrical Engineering, Electronics Engineering, Energy Systems Engineering, Electromechanical Engineering or Powerline Technician) (Preferred)
  • May consider a combination of post-secondary education, experience and/or equivalent designations
  • Prior experience as an Overhead/Underground Powerline Technician/Apprentice is an asset
  • Valid class "DZ" or higher Driver's License in good standing
  • Demonstrated experience working with tools
  • Physically able to perform the essential duties in all weather conditions
  • Comfortable working at heights and in confined spaces
  • Ability to read and interpret distribution system construction drawings and supporting documents
  • Knowledge of the Electrical Safety Authority Regulation 22/04, Toronto Hydro and Utility Work Protection Code, WHMIS, CPR, First Aid and all other applicable legislation Demonstrated proficiency in a PC Windows environment and associated desktop software applications
